Pemberley

Pemberley is the country home of the Darcy family. It is described as a great estate in Derbyshire, which is situated in the middle of England.

Jane Austen described Elizabeth’s first sight of Pemberley as

“ … a large, handsome stone building, standing well on rising ground, and backed by a ridge of high woody hills; and in front, a stream of some natural importance was swelled into greater, but without any artificial appearance. Its banks were neither formal nor falsely adorned.”

Jane Austen is believed to to have located Pemberley near the town of Bakewell, some five miles from Chatsworth House, which she reportedly visited in 1811.

Some people believe she modelled Pemberley on the beautiful house of Chatsworth, even though in Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet and the Gardiners visited Chatsworth before going to Pemberley.

Different film and TV adaptations of Pride and Prejudice used different estates, both for exterior views and interiors.

The BBC 1995 TV series used Lyme Park in Derbyshire for the exterior scenes, although the interiors had to be shot elsewhere, at Sudbury Hall in Cheshire, two miles west of the Derbyshire border. Lyme Park is pictured above.
